To make money from your writing efforts then you have to follow 3 steps as your core strategy. There are of course other things that will assist you but these three things are so fundamental that everything else is just icing on the cake.
Step 1 - Keyword research
Research your keywords - I can't believe how many people do NOT do this. With out good, high search, low competition keywords as your base for an article then you may as well stop right now and give up.
Step 2 - Build Links
If you want to make money from an article - Be it from adsense or affiliate commissions then you'd better build some links to your article of choice.
One article deserves at least 20 dofollow and nofollow links.
Preferably keep your link ratio 80% dofollow to 20% nofollow.
If you do not build links - Someone may steal your niche.
Step 3 - Write Often
If your work effort sits somewhere between lazy bum and sloth then you may need to reconsider the possibility of making anything whatsoever, let alone a tidy profit.
To get anywhere with article writing, you need to be productive and by productive I mean working hard and smart.
Use your spare time effectively and efficiently to build the total amount of presence you have on the net.
The more you write the more chance you have to make money, so it stands to reason that you should write often.
