Link Building Mistakes

By A.j James

Link Building Mistakes

When it comes to link building most marketer are aware that it is time consuming and is going to consume large amounts of effort on their behalf.

To think that there are many marketers wasting a lot of their precious time on methods that are ineffective is a little sad, unless of course if they are my competition - Ha Ha

Think Before You Link!

One of the most frequent mistakes is to spend time writing articles on content sites that are nofollow.

These nofollow links are almost worthless and to think that someone might be spending hours writing articles for them is almost abhorrent, especially since they probably wouldn't do it if they understood the subtleties of dofollow and nofollow.

Nofollow links just aren't worth anything. Dofollow links are, so it stands to reason that a link builder would try to only build links from dofollow enabled pages and leave the nofollow ones for those who don't care.

No Follow - No Thanks!

For this reason I don't go near nofollow sites as a protest, especially since they'll take my content, just not my links. It's a bit like some saying they'll take your volunteer work but they wont say thankyou.

Another big mistake I see a lot in link building is what I refer to as the social bookmarking fallacy. This is where a person gets a ton of back links from social bookmarking sites.

The problem with this is that it looks very, very unnatural as far as mother Google is concerned.

This is why only a few links from social bookmarking site are useful, any more and you'll probably feel a negative backlash from the search engines.

Something else that can adversely affect your position is too many links being built at once, this seems unnatural, unless you can keep it up permanently.

Breaking news does create a flurry of links to a site and the search engines wont punish this, but once the news becomes stale, the rankings slip away.

This is why if you plan to absolutely bombard the internet with links then you'd be wise to keep up the effort indefinitely lest your website slip away when you stop.

Remember

By avoiding some simple mistakes we can build links the right way and ensure that we get the right response from the search engines.

In general, I agree. DoFollow links are the way to go and building them gradually, over a wide variety of domains is best.
